James Gunn Confirms Guardians of the Galaxy Were Set To Be Debut In One-Shots

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has confirmed that the team was originally set to debut in individual Marvel One-Shots.

Marvel Studios has abandoned the “One-Shot” series of short films that bridge the gap between films but for a moment, they were one of the most inspired and creative projects the studio had. It turns out that the short film medium was originally going to be how the intergalactic Guardians of the Galaxy were going to be introduced.

In the brand new The Story Of Marvel Studios book, which chronicles the decade-plus rise of the MCU, Kevin Feige revealed the James Gunn’s characters were originally going to get their start in individual short films under the One-Shot banner.

“We toyed with the idea of doing short films on Drax, on Rocket and Groot, and on Gamora, leading up to Guardians.”

The plans were obviously scrapped as Feige said “…it was too much.” James Gunn commented on the Guardians of the Galaxy joining the MCU via short films on Twitter. Gunn even went so far as to detail the hypothetical short films that would have ensued had the plan manifested.

I forgot about this, but this is true. Not only did we plan it, we shot footage for one of the scripts (Rocket & Groot) – part of which was the first shot of Rocket shooting a machine gun on Groot’s back that we showed at San Diego Comic Con. https://t.co/fxlD85f5YB

We didn’t end up doing it because I realized it was ridiculous for me to be writing & directing 4 short films at the same time as I was prepping an enormous world-building movie.

The 4th short was going to be Quill’s backstory which is really what’s at the beginning of Guardians now. It was really hard for me to admit it was too much for me & I was sad deciding I couldn’t do them (especially Rocket & Groot). But, you know, maybe someday!

While the premise and intended execution of debuting the Marvel One-Shots before the preceding theatrical releases was a great idea, it sure does seem a lot for Gunn to take on his whole. While it is disappointing that we never got to see these short films, we still have the OG Guardians of the Galaxy film, which many consider a near-perfect movie.

In addition to Chris Pratt and Will Poulter, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is also expected to star Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn. The film’s core cast members were last seen in Avengers: Endgame.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023. Say tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming James Gunn film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
