Ava DuVernay Hints ‘New Gods’ Was Scrapped Due To The Snyder Cut

Ava DuVernay hints that her planned New Gods film was scrapped due to the Snyder Cut.

One of the many projects that was in development for the DC Extended Universe was New Gods. The film was set to be directed by Ava DuVernay from a script she was co-writing with Tom King. Unfortunately, the project was ultimately scrapped from Warner Bros. and a possible link to the Zack Snyder Cut of Justice League may be part of why it was shelved.

In an interview with Radio Andy, Ava DuVernay reflected on her work developing the script for New Gods with Tom King before Warner Bros. shelved the project. She teased that elements of the story were portrayed in a certain film, which incentivized its cancellation:

It was reported earlier this year that Ava DuVernay’s New Gods was cancelled due to it exceeding parameters beyond a solo movie. Given that the film was expected to feature Darkseid, who also appeared in the Snyder Cut of Justice League, it appears that the studio did not want any interference between the properties. Despite the cancellation of New Gods, Ava DuVernay is still working with a DC Comics property on the Naomi series on The CW, which she developed. The series is set to premiere in 2022.

Here is the synopsis for the Snyder Cut:

“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”

The Snyder Cut stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, JK Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is available on HBO Max. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the Snyder Cut, Ava DuVernay, and the future of the DC Extended Universe, and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
