Sam Raimi reacted to the appearance of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Known for his contributions to the horror movie genre with films such as Evil Dead as well as his iconic Spider-Man trilogy, Sam Raimi is returning to Marvel as the director of the highly-anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Given the new film’s connection to WandaVision and Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans are curious to see how the stories will connect, particularly given the nature of Tom Holland’s new standalone film reintroducing familiar villains, including Alfred Molina as Doc Ock.
Perhaps the most viral moment from the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home was when we see the epic return of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, as he says, “Hello Peter.” That single moment left fans in excitement at the prospect of seeing a new Sinister Six in the form of villains from previous iterations of Spider-Man movies uniting, potentially hinting at the involvement of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as well.
When asked by SYFY Wire about his thoughts on the new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, Sam Raimi expressed his excitement, and compared the new VFX approach to Alfred Molina as Doc Ock to his previous iteration in Spider-Man 2:
“That was beautiful. He looks great, the animation’s great. I’m assuming it’s not puppeted because when we did Doc Ock, we had puppets and animation for his octopus tentacles. But it was smooth and powerful and I loved his costume. I think it’s gonna be a great movie.”
It’s only a matter of time before we see how the Multiverse is implemented in the new film, and in the meantime, fans will continue to obsessively rewatch the trailer and relish the moments of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, hints of Willem Dafoe’s possible return as the Green Goblin and other villains’ return such as Jamie Foxx as Electro. The excitement of seeing certain villains return is a testament to the legacy that the films of Sam Raimi left on the popular culture.
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:
“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.”
