Andy Serkis Was ‘Devastated’ By Snoke’s Death In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

Andy Serkis reflected on the surprise death of Snoke in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Out of any actor working in the business today, Andy Serkis might reign supreme when it comes to his prolific work in some of the biggest franchises in cinematic history. Of great renown as a pioneer in motion capture, some of his iconic roles include Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, the titular King Kong (2005), Caesar in the latest Planet of the Apes trilogy and Ulysses Klaue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of his most iconic roles include Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.

The discourse around the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy is probably one of the most volatile on the internet. To this day, fans are still arguing over how the films turned out, and often at the center of such debates is Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which despite receiving enthusiastic critic reviews is perhaps one of the most polarizing movies of the last decade. Some viewers were not pleased with how Rian Johnson answered the mysteries set up by J.J. Abrams in the previous film, and one of the biggest subversions was the death of Andy Serkis’ Supreme Leader Snoke at the hands of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

While promoting his new film Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Andy Serkis was asked by Gizmodo about the surprise death of Snoke in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which admittedly bummed him out a bit:

“I was devastated when I read that script because it was all going so well. I was like, ‘Man, this is a boss character. I’m going to love playing… what!? You’re kidding me, what?’ I was like ‘Okay, is a good idea? I supposed it is. I was slightly mortified, pardon the pun.”

Despite his initial disappointment with his tenure as Snoke in Star Wars was cut short in The Last Jedi, Andy Serkis ultimately accepted it, and felt that it was necessary in moving the story forward:

“It was all in the right, I think. I loved playing that character and I love the face-off scene between Kylo Ren and Rey, and so it was great.”

Snoke’s death was one of several elements of The Last Jedi that split fans right down the middle. Many theories were built up within the two years following the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and when Rian Johnson answered with his surprise death, some were left disappointed. It’s safe to say that even though the Sequel Trilogy has ended, fans will continue debating about them for years to come – at least until the story gets inevitably revisited years down the line.
