Zack Snyder’s Justice League was cheekily referenced in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
One of the most popular sitcoms from the last decade, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is set to wrap up with its final season this year. The show has been notorious for dropping pop culture references left and right with most of them coming from Jake Peralta, the show’s lead. In the latest episode, Detective Peralta and his superior Captain Raymond Holt exchange a few words, with the former eventually referencing the theatrical cut of Justice League, as well as Zack Snyder’s take.
In the Brooklyn Nine-Nine precinct conference room, Holt is discussing how he has a plan that has three parts, like a trident’s prongs. Peralta quickly steps in and says that Aquaman’s trident has five prongs. His captain corrects him by stating that the prefix “tri-” literally means three. Peralta then claps back by saying that Aquaman’s trident, which was seen in both Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the theatrical cut, has five prongs.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine character is correct as Aquaman’s trident in the Justice League films does have five prongs. It only isn’t until his solo film that the character manages to snag the Trident of Atlan, which sports the traditional three prongs. It’s honestly surprising that Peralta was able to catch such a unique and interesting detail.
Here is the synopsis for Zack Snyder’s Justice League:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
The Snyder Cut stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, JK Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
