Loki and Doctor Strange 2 writer Michael Waldron says that the Benedict Cumberbatch-led sequel will go in a “scarier direction” than its predecessor.
One of the most exciting aspects of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is that Sam Raimi has been tapped to direct the film. Raimi, while most well-known for his Spider-Man trilogy, has directed a slew of iconic horror films like Evil Dead and Drag Me To Hell. Raimi replaced the first film’s director Scott Derrickson – another iconic horror auteur – after he dropped out due to “creative differences”. Derrickson’s absence allowed Michael Waldron, the man behind Loki, to tweak the Doctor Strange 2 script alongside Sam Raimi.
In an interview with Friends From Work, the Loki writer touched upon Sam Raimi taking over Scott Derrickson, as well as how Doctor Strange 2 is now going in a more “scarier direction”.
“[Going into the horror world is] obviously something that Scott Derrickson, the director of the first movie, does so well…obviously that influence, you feel it in the first one. Even though it’s not a horror movie, there is like this sort of spookiness throughout it. It’s part of what makes that movie work so well.”
“The work [Derrickson had] done on the first one, the work that he and the previous writer on the second one, Jade Bartlett, they’ve done some work on the second one, and it’s like you just dive in.”
“In this case, COVID just gave me and Sam more time to make it our own thing. It’s cool, I’m glad that there was the chance to maybe push in a slightly scarier direction. Just because Sam does that so well.”
