9 Easy Jumper-and-Trouser Outfits That Look Next-Level Chic

My sartorial needs right now are simple; to be warm and comfortable, so that means nothing is coming between me and my jumpers at the moment. Still, after pulling on my favourite cream cable knit jumper for what feels like (and probably is) the 500th day in a row, I’m in need of some fresh inspiration on how to style it as we head into spring.

Okay, so I know what you’re thinking, jumper-and-trouser outfits are hardly groundbreaking—they’re one of the most basic combinations out there. But aren’t the simplest things always the most effective? I certainly think so. Putting jeans, leggings and joggers to one side, I was keen to discover how fashion people are assembling their jumper-and-trouser outfits for spring in an attempt to make my own ensembles more polished (though no less comfortable). And what I found was seriously impressive.

From foolproof pairings, including cable knits with navy strides to the easy way to upgrade the black trousers you used to wear religiously to the office, scroll on to see nine jumper-and-trouser outfits that look beyond chic.

Style Notes: The look I’m most impatient to re-create is this offering. A cream cable-knit with navy trousers was always going to look elevated, but tuck the trousers into glossy riding boots? It looks even more stylish.

A staple I’d love to have in my wardrobe.

The perfect navy trouser.

I can already think of so many ways to wear these boots.

Style Notes: Cargo trousers are having a moment, with those in the know opting to wear theirs with minimal heels and heeled boots for a glossy spin. Me? I’ll take cues from this look by adding a grey oversize knit into the equation.

This is perfectly oversized.

One of the sleekest pairs of cargo trousers I’ve seen.

I already own these and can confirm they’re super comfortable.

Style Notes: Assuming you already own a basic black jumper, give it a directional spin by styling it with a pair of leather trousers. Mimi makes hers look even more sleek by pairing them with leather boots.

A jumper you can’t go wrong with.

These trousers come in sizes 6 to 26.

Great—another pair of Totême boots to drool over.

Style Notes: Although I can be incredibly clumsy, even I am drawn to the creamy wide-leg trousers that fashion types seem to be wearing on repeat right now. My favourite interpretation of the trend? Sasha’s look—her burgundy knit and cream trousers create an elevated colour pairing I can’t fault.

COS’s knitwear category is looking incredibly strong right now.

I’m always on the lookout for premium belts.

A pair that won’t break the bank.

Style Notes: If you have an old pair of black trousers lurking in the back of your wardrobe, why not give them a springtime spin by styling them with a pair of trending trainers (I’ve opted for New Balance) and a colour-block knit.

Isn’t this fun?

The pleats on these trousers ensure they hang beautifully.

2022’s most in-demand kick.

Style Notes: ‘70s styling was evident on the 2022 runway, with crochet textures set to be even bigger than usual this spring. Up the throwback ante by wearing your crochet knitwear with a pair of corduroy trousers.

The only thing that can improve this Chloé jumper? the fact it’s on sale.

Corduroy gets a sleekover thanks to Reformation.

Lift your look with a pair of colour-pop boots.

Style Notes: Polo collars on knitwear is a look that’s not going anywhere—make like Lydia and wear yours with a pair of no-fuss trousers and mules for a masterclass in minimal styling.

This also comes in classic navy.

The slight kick-flare on these trousers makes them even more fashionable.

I’ve had my eye on these mules for the longest time.

Style Notes: Breton-stripe knitwear continues to be a top-seller for most brands this spring—use yours to elevate your classic black, wide-leg trousers for everything from work meetings to dinners out.

I enjoy the varied stripes on this frugal knit.

The cut of these high-street trousers looks so expensive.

Show me an outfit these boots won’t go with.

Style Notes: I’m seeing more all-grey outfits than ever before right now. The key to keeping it aesthetically interesting is to layer different shades of grey with one another. This look with a light grey knit and dark grey trousers perfectly illustrates the concept.

This is impossibly soft.

This is currently in my H&M basket.

To dress every day in The Row—wouldn’t that be dreamy?
