I Wasn’t a Skirt Person Until I Saw These 17 Styles

There’s aren’t many wardrobe categories that I haven’t plundered over the years. Jackets? The more the merrier. Trousers? I’ll have a pair in every colour, please. But skirts? For some reason they’ve never really piqued my interest. Maybe it was their fussiness that required more thought, whether it was around shoe pairings or seasonally-appropriate lengths. I also like to feel free to move, and in this context, trousers tend to best serve me best.

However, something has shifted this season, and the maxi skirts that were sent down the SS22’s runways unexpectedly tugged at my heart strings. They were daring, dramatic and satisfyingly statement making, whether it was via bright prints, high-shine fabrics or unusual cuts. LYST confirms that I’m not the only one loving statement maxi skirts right now: “Short hemlines might be defining the current season, but maxi long lines are coming in hot for the next one. ‘Oversized’ and ‘maxi’ are already amongst the most popular keywords when looking at dresses, and we predict that the trend will continue in the coming months.”

Perhaps it’s a rebellion against the banality of my WFH uniform, or maybe it speaks to a craving for more polished, grown-up dressing. Either way, I can confirm that the statement midi-maxi skirt has shot straight to the top of my wishlist. Unsurprisingly, Gucci has really run with this vibrant trend, offering up iterations in a graphic monochrome prints, alongside one very pleasing kilt-inspired style in anarchic vinyl. There are also plenty of less OTT offerings to be found, such as Victoria Beckham’s black and orange striped skirt or AWAKE Mode’s gingham checks. Both offer interest to any outfit, but still feel classic.

When it comes to styling, I’m not going to lie, a statement midi skirt can be a little tricky. However, if we’re talking failsafe options, you can’t go wrong with a tucked-in oversized shirt or boxy white T-shirt and, while the weather is still chilly, a slouchy roll neck. For those wanting to be a little more adventurous, there’s plenty of fun to be found in print clashing: Stripes with animal print, gingham with polka dots. Top tip: try picking one colour from the skirt to pick-up in your top of choice as it will help tie the two together. Let’s just call it organised chaos.

But, whatever your statement skirt of choice, the key is to have fun with it. Need a starting point? Scroll down to see and shop our edit of the best statement skirts available to buy now. Happy browsing!
