Benedict Cumberbatch Teases ‘Bonkers’ Nature Of ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’

Benedict Cumberbatch teased that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be a truly “bonkers” movie.

For all the hype behind Spider-Man: No Way Home opening up the Multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the big screen, it’s easy to forget that a few months after its release, we will be diving further into the concept with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays Stephen Strange in both films can’t stress enough how wild his upcoming sequel is going to be.

In an appearance on WTF with Marc Maron, Benedict Cumberbatch briefly touched on Doctor Strange 2. This led to an interesting exchange, hinting at what kind of role the titular hero may have in what is shaping up to be an ambitious new entry in the MCU:

Benedict Cumberbatch: This is the second one of him on his own.

Marc Maron: So this is your movie.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Yeah, well, yeah that’s part of the problem. There’s a lot of stuff going on in it. It’s like, “do I have a character arc in this? Is it working?” There’s great stuff for me to do in it. It’s very busy. It’s called The Multiverse of Madness and it’s bonkers.

Some may hear Benedict Cumberbatch’s description here and might fret over the fact that he described the film as “very busy” especially given that the film is currently undergoing extensive reshoots. Also, the fact that he is heard questioning whether or not he really has a character arc as Doctor Strange could potentially concern some fans fearing that something might be lost amidst the ambition of the concept.

It will be interesting to see how director Sam Raimi and Marvel Studios bring this crazy concept to life. At the end of the day, we can at least guarantee that a consummate professional like Academy Award-nominee Benedict Cumberbatch will bring his A game to Doctor Strange 2.

Under the direction of Sam Raimi from a script written by Jade Bartlett and Michael Waldron, Benedict Cumberbatch will be joined by Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Xochitl Gomez. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2022.

Benedict Cumberbatch will next be seen as Doctor Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Here is the synopsis:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Thomas Haden Church, and Rhys Ifans with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield heavily rumored to appear.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit theaters on December 17, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the film as well as Benedict Cumberbatch’s future as Doctor Strange, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
