‘Avengers’ Star Stellan Skarsgard Has Perfect Response To Marvel Criticisms

Avengers actor Stellan Skarsgard shared his thoughts on Marvel criticisms from prestige filmmakers.

For over two years, one of the more prominent (and admittedly tiresome) topics in discussing the state of film stems from legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s comments that Marvel movies are “not cinema” and are more akin to amusement park rides. For better or worse, the discussion once again ignited after Ridley Scott expressed his disdain for Marvel movies as well as superhero movies in general. Stellan Skarsgard, whom had a role in The Avengers, Thor and other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had an interesting response.

While speaking with The Guardian, Stellan Skarsgard defended Marvel movies, but shared that he understood the frustration that Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott among other filmmakers have when it comes to the state of Hollywood films and projects that have no intellectual property attached to it:

“I’ve got nothing against superhero movies. I’ve been in a couple and they definitely have a place. The problem is that the system that allows eight people to own half of the wealth in the world enhances the power of the market forces, so small and independent cinemas rarely exist any more outside a few big cities. There’s no distribution channels for all the mid-budget films that have the best actors, the best writing, because they can’t throw up $3m for a marketing campaign. When cinemas let them in, they do so for one week and if it doesn’t pay off in a week, they’re gone… Remember that The Godfather first opened in 100 cinemas in the United States – big films now open in 4,000. They had small ads in the New York Times, but it grew and grew because it was such a good film. The people’s opinion has no chance any more. And that is sad. I think that we should have Marvel films and more rollercoaster films. We should have other films, too. And that’s the sad thing: when raw market forces come in, studios start being run by companies that don’t care if they’re dealing in films or toothpaste so long as they get their 10% [return]. When AT&T took over Time Warner, it immediately told HBO to become lighter and more commercial. They were always making money. But not enough for an investor.”

Stellan Skarsgard has had an expansive acting career, having worked on films of all types. He has his feet in both the independent, smaller-scale films as well as in the massive blockbuster films of Marvel Studios. The Avengers star can now be seen in Dune, which is currently playing in theaters. Meanwhile, here is the synopsis for the last Avengers film, Endgame:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Avengers: Endgame is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming on Disney Plus through IMAX Enhanced presentation.
