Eternals co-writer Kaz Firpo has revealed why Kit Harington’s role as The Black Knight was so limited in the recent Marvel film.
Despite a big divide among critics, Marvel’s latest film, Eternals has already become a big box-office hit. The film earned over 71M at the domestic box-office on its opening weekend along and has, as of this writing, earned over 282M worldwide. One thing that surprised audiences, however, was how limited Kit Harington’s role as the Black Knight was in the film.
In Eternals, Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman; a character in the Marvel Universe who holds the title of the Black Knight. Throughout the film, Harington’s character never becomes the hero and is only featured in a handful of scenes. For the most part the acts as a love interest for Gemma Chan’s Sersi. However, bigger things for the character are more than likely on the way.

In the film’s final after-credits sequence Kit Harington’s character opens up a case containing a sword with his family’s crest on it. He eventually moves to touch the sword saying “I’m sorry, I have to try.” An off-screen voice then says “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?” That voice was eventually revealed to be Mahershala Ali’s Blade, indicating a potential team-up between the two may be on the horizon.
While speaking to The Direct, Eternals writer Kaz Firpo discussed Kit Harington’s limited role in the film and revealed where the inspiration from it came from:
“…[Dane] has a long history with Sersi in the comics. They have a really complex and interesting relationship that goes back in a lot of different runs… what we really wanted with Dane… [was] somebody that had that gravitas… that power, [who] frankly had the potential to be something great… a character that learns the rules of this world, and then still has this love for Sersi, and still has this potential for where they could go… where their characters could end up.”
He then went into why Kit Harington never became Black Knight in the film:
“So it wasn’t a choice to say ‘Dane should only be this much,’ it was really like, ‘who would this human [character] relationship with Sersi be?’ For it to become Dane was this no-brainer once you looked at the mythology of the universe.”
Here is the synopsis for Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
