Star Wars exec Kathleen Kennedy has reportedly had her Lucasfilm contract extended through 2024.
After George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, long-time collaborator Kathleen Kennedy was given the keys to the kingdom to help with the transition, becoming president of the prestigious film and production house. A new report from Matthew Belloni on Puck states that Kennedy “recently re-upped her deal for another three years.” This means that Kennedy will continue to be the purveyor of all things Lucasfilm until 2024.
Kathleen Kennedy’s contract extension comes at a time when many are questioning her ability to manage the company’s various franchises, namely Star Wars. Recent reports have all but confirmed that Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron has been indefinitely delayed due to creative differences between the filmmaker and the brass over at Lucasfilm.
The talk around town appears to be that filmmakers are facing a creative barrier built by the executives at Lucasfilm. In recent years, Star Wars projects by Josh Trank, Colin Trevorrow, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, David Benioff and Dan Wess, and Rian Johnson’s trilogy have all been shelved or placed on hold due to various reasons, with the most common grievance being “creative differences”.
Then again, shows like The Mandalorian and its various spin-offs have all been created under Kathleen Kennedy’s watch. It looks like there aren’t any theatrical Star Wars projects in the works at the moment, but fans can look forward to Lucasfilm’s The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as the Willow series and the upcoming Indiana Jones film.
