Paul Sun-Hyung Lee Set To Play Uncle Iroh In Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’

Netflix has tapped Kim’s Convenience star Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, to play Uncle Iroh in their live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Filming on the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series has begun, as Netflix begins to round out the cast of supporting characters. In a brilliant piece of casting, the streaming giant has brought Kim’s Convenience alumn Paul Sun-Hyung Lee on board to star as fan-favorite and food enthusiast Uncle Iroh. Lim Kay Siu will star as Gyatso, an Air nomad monk who serves as a father figure for Aang. Ken Leung will star as Commander Zhao, an ambitious Fire Nation military member.

In addition to announcing the casting news, Netflix also revealed that they’ve partnered up with Pixomondo Virtual Production to shoot the series using a virtual production stage, similar to the one used in The Mandalorian.

Paul Sun-Hyung Lee’s first major role outside of Kim’s Convenience saw him playing a Rebel starfighter pilot in The Mandalorian. Sun-Hyung appeared in two episodes and received critical acclaim for his appearance in the Star Wars series. One can only imagine how excited Paul Sun-Hyung must be to return to another beloved property.

With the Fire Nation on the brink of global domination, a young girl and her brother discover a 12-year old Airbender who reveals himself as the Avatar. Will this irresponsible kid accept his destiny in time to save the world?

Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the animated series featured the voicing talents of Zach Tyler Eisen, Mae Whitman, Jack DeSena, Dante Basco, Jessie Flower, Dee Bradley Baker, Mako, Greg Baldwin, Grey DeLisle, and Mark Hamill.
