‘Star Wars’: ‘Rogue Squadron’ Reportedly Delayed Due To Creative Differences Between Patty Jenkins & Lucasfilm

A new report suggests that Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars film Rogue Squadron is going through production delays due to creative differences between herself and Lucasfilm.

Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron was announced during Disney 2020 Investor and was dated for December 22, 2023. The Star Wars film was set to reintroduce fans to the theatrical side of the galaxy far, far away, as it would be the first film in the franchise to hit cinemas since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Last week it was reported that Patty Jenkins’ Starfighter pilot-focused film wouldn’t be filming in 2022 and was delayed indefinitely. The delay was said to be due to scheduling conflicts, as Jenkins is next set to helm Wonder Woman 3.

However, a new piece from Puck suggests something else entirely for the cause of the setback. Written by former The Hollywood Reporter editor Matthew Belloni, the opinion piece suggests that the Star Wars production was delayed between creative differences held by Patty Jenkins and Lucasfilm execs. Apparently, Jenkins and the execs couldn’t work things out over the film’s script, which is being written by Matthew Robinson.

The piece also claims that Lucasfilm is placing heavy restrictions on filmmakers working on the Star Wars universe, which Patty Jenkins isn’t a fan of. Puck reports that Jenkins had much more leeway and freedom on the Wonder Woman franchise. Things may look dour for the upcoming Star Wars film, but the film is still slated to release, and Deadline reports that Jenkins very much intends on helming it.

Here is the official synopsis for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the last feature in the franchise:

Lucasfilm and director J. J. Abrams join forces once again to take viewers on an epic journey to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the riveting conclusion of the seminal Skywalker saga, where new legends will be born and the final battle for freedom is yet to come.

Directed by J. J. Abrams, Episode IX stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Ian McDiarmid, and Billy Dee Williams.
