James Gunn has revealed that Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani was almost in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
As a filmmaker in the superhero genre, James Gunn has proven himself tie and again to be one of the more interesting voices working within it. One of his signatures has been to have recognizable names in the industry show up in his movies for otherwise minor roles. This has included Seth Green as Howard the Duck and Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and too many names to count in The Suicide Squad. Once upon a time, this almost included Eternals star Kumali Nanjiani.
While not exactly an A-List star, Kumail Nanjiani is an actor with a resume that stretches all the way back to 2008, with his most notable roles including parts in Men In Black: International and Silicon Valley. The actor found his way to internet stardom when he revealed a photo of himself getting in shape for the upcoming Eternals film which quickly became a meme. Once upon a time, however, the actor was slated for another role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In a recent series of posts, James Gunn revealed he had written a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with Kumail Nanjiani in mind. Ultimately, the role was a small one and was not worth derailing the actor’s part in Eternals:
Here is the synopsis for Marvel Studios’ Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
