‘Harry Potter’: Chris Columbus Wants To Direct Original Cast In ‘Cursed Child’ Film

Chris Columbus would like to direct the original Wizarding trio in an adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

The Harry Potter film franchise remains one of the most successful in cinematic history. Released from 2001 to 2011, all eight films adapting author J.K. Rowling’s original seven books have grossed a total of roughly $7.7 billion in global box office returns, leading to a spin-off prequel film series with Fantastic Beasts. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a two-part play that serves as the canonical eighth story in the series premiered in 2016. While a film adaptation is not in development, film director Chris Columbus is interested in helming the project.

Chris Columbus previously directed the first two films in the Harry Potter series: The Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets. In an interview with Variety commemorating the 20th anniversary of the original film’s release, the director expressed his desire to reunite with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in an adaptation of The Cursed Child:

“I would love to direct ‘The Cursed Child.’ It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. It’s a small fantasy of mine.”

Chris Columbus’ journey with the Harry Potter franchise ended after the third film, The Prisoner of Azkaban, in which he served as a producer. It is interesting to hear that he is interested in directing an adaptation of The Cursed Child, a play that received acclaim from critics but also a highly polarized response from fans.

It is clear that Warner Bros. would love to bring an adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to the big screen with the original film’s cast at some point, whether or not Chris Columbus would direct it. Even though they are still working with J.K. Rowling on the Fantastic Beasts film series, it is clear that at least with the series’ second film The Crimes of Grindelwald that audiences are not responding to them in the same fervor that they did with the original films. Plus, with the author being a subject of much controversy over her previous Transphobic comments, the future of the Wizarding World on the big screen remains a mystery to some extent.

Here is the official synopsis for Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter prequel spin-off film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald:

“At the end of the first film, the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise wizards and witches up to rule over all non-magical beings.”

Directed by David Yates from a script written by J. K. Rowling, the second film stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Jude Law, and Johnny Depp.

Fantastic BeastsThe Secrets of Dumbledore is currently scheduled for an April 15, 2022 release. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the Harry Potter franchise, Chris Columbus’ upcoming films and Warner Bros., and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more video content!
