Iron Fist co-creator Roy Thomas has no qualms with Finn Jones’ performance as the superpowered martial artist in the Netflix series.
While most of the Marvel shows on Netflix were warmly received, the obvious outlier was Finn Jones’ Iron Fist series. The project received negative reception due to its poor pacing and lack of originality in the wake of fellow Marvel series’ like Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Finn Jones’ performance was mostly met with positivity, though the elephant in the room regarding his race grew as the series went on.
One of the show’s main criticisms online was how the character, a white billionaire, went to Asia to learn the mystical arts and returned as a savior. Seeing as the character was originally white when co-created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, many believed the criticism wasn’t valid and discredited Finn Jones’ performance. Marvel seems to have gotten the message, as one of their biggest hits of the year was Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a film that put the focus on an Asian-American martial artist.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, co-creator Roy Thomas praised Finn Jones’ performance and discussed his thoughts on the Netflix series.
“Oh, I watched all of it. Yeah. ‘Iron Fist’ had a few problems here and there, but I really liked the actor who played Iron Fist. I liked the general concept of it and everything.”
It’s no surprise that Roy Thomas enjoyed the series seeing as he helped shape the character, but it’s interesting to see him point out some of the Netflix show’s problems, even without mentioning them. So what’s his favorite of the Marvel/Netflix bunch? Jessica Jones.
“Maybe some series were better than others, like Jessica Jones was one of the best with the revival of the Purple Man, so wonderfully played by Tennant.”
Iron Fist stars Finn Jones, Jessica Henwick, Sacha Dhawan, Tom Pelphrey, Jessica Stroup, Simone Missick, and Alice Eve. Here’s the official synopsis:
