Eternals director Chloe Zhao has opened up about the upcoming Marvel film’s Superman reference.
Marvel’s newest film, Eternals is one that has raised a number of comparisons and interesting questions. The second trailer for the film showed Richard Madden’s Ikaris in action, and fans quickly noted that his powers were not all different from that of Superman’s. One of the film’s latest promos even has a child comparing the two. This begs the question though of where did this reference come from?
Early reactions to Marvel’s new film Eternals have, thus far, been positive, with some even calling it a masterpiece. Everyone involved with the film has been hyping the movie up on the interview circuit, including director Chloe Zhao. While speaking to ComicBook.com, the director opened up about the Superman reference:
“I take some responsibility for that. I think we’re in the business of telling stories about mythology, and Superman, for example, comes from origin of mythology. In many different cultures, there’s a form of Superman. And the people that created Superman and the brilliant filmmakers [who] brought Superman to screen, their movies are basically, in my opinion, doing a modern interpretation of that mythology.
It doesn’t mean we can’t pay tribute and have a good time with these iconic ones that we all love to so much. I mean, who doesn’t love Superman and Batman? Clearly our Eternals like them.”
Here is the synopsis for Chloe Zhao’s Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
