‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’: Evangeline Lily Finally Understands Hope Van Dyne

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star Evangeline Lily revealed that she finally “gets” her character of Hope van Dyne.

Evangeline Lily first made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2015’s Ant-Man. She later donned her own shrinking suit in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp. Lily’s Hope van Dyne then briefly appeared in the finale of Avengers: Endgame after being snapped back to life. Now, the character is set to return in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and it looks like Lily genuinely understands the scientist/superheroine for her fourth go around.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Evangeline Lily discussed how the character of Hope van Dyne was originally an enigma to her and how she had difficulty understanding her.

“Hope is an odd enigma for me. I wish I could say otherwise because I want to honor her; I want to honor every character I ever play. But the truth is that I find it harder to know and understand Hope than any other character I’ve ever played before.”

Lily continued by revealing how she finally understands the character of The Wasp/Hope van Dyne and how the upcoming Ant-Man threequel is halfway done.

“We’re just a little over halfway through. And I will say that after I read the script of the film, I did have a kind of eureka moment; I said to Peyton [Reed], ‘Oh my God, I think I finally get her.’ (Laughs.) Three or four films in, I thought, ‘I think I get it now.’ So I’m hoping that when we come to wrap and when I see the movie, I’m going to know the difference. But I don’t think anyone else will. I think I’m a good bluffer. That’s what I do for a living. But I know the difference and I’m hopeful that in this one, I’ll feel like I can watch it and go, ‘Yeah, you had a better handle on her in this one than you ever have before.’ That’s my goal, anyway. That’s my hope.”

It’s surprising to hear Evangeline Lily openly discuss how she wasn’t connected to the character of Hope van Dyne as she’s done an excellent job portraying her. Lily recently praised the script for the threequel, calling it “really special”.

Evangeline Lily’s The Wasp was last seen in Avengers: Endgame. Here is the official plot synopsis for the Marvel Studios film:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin.

Avengers: Endgame is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming on Disney Plus, while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will hit theaters on February 17, 2023.
