The Punisher star Jon Bernthal openly discussed fans wanting him to play Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After his debut as Frank Castle in Daredevil‘s second season, Netflix and Marvel quickly commissioned a solo series featuring Jon Bernthal as The Punisher. The series was met with praise thanks to Bernthal’s performance as the vigilante and the show’s handling of dark subject matter. After two seasons, along with the rest of the Netflix Marvel shows, The Punisher was canceled.
Since then, fans have been eagerly hoping to see Jon Bernthal reprise his role as Frank Castle. Since the logistics of folding the Netflix Marvel characters into the larger MCU is murky, fans have also been hoping to see the actor take on the role of Wolverine, which has been vacant since 2017.
In an interview with Forbes, Jon Bernthal was asked about how fans are eager to see him as Wolverine should he not return to The Punisher role. Bernthal candidly responded to the pleas of fans but suggested he’d much rather return as Frank Castle than join the MCU as a mutant.
“Look, the criteria in which I sort of decide what I’m doing next is: Does the script move me? Who am I working with? Who is the filmmaker and is that somebody I’m dying to work with? I’m going to hold onto that moving forward no matter what that is,”
“I get it, I get that the Marvel questions, you’re asking these questions because it’s super important to a lot of people; people love these characters and I get that and I come to that with absolute respect. What I will tell you again is that Frank Castle is in my bones. Frank Castle is in my bones.”
It’s unclear who will play Wolverine when he inevitably joins the MCU but it seems pretty clear that Jon Bernthal wants to stick it out as The Punisher. Bernthal recently expressed interest in returning to the role, so let’s hope Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is listening!
