Director Chloé Zhao Reveals Why The ‘Eternals’ Didn’t Fight Thanos In ‘Avengers’

Eternals director Chloé Zhao has revealed why her characters in the film didn’t fight Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame.

Since the first trailer for Chloé Zhao’s upcoming Marvel film, Eternals was released, many have brought up a rather obvious question regarding their existence. Mainly, why didn’t these all-powerful characters fight any of the previous antagonists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Recently Zhao has given fans an answer.

In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine, the director was asked why the Eternals characters didn’t help against Thanos in the Avengers films. While Chloé Zhao didn’t give an exact answer, she did reveal that it has something to do with their relationship to the Deviants and the Celestials:

“[The audience] will understand why. Not only why, but how complicated not interfering made them feel. We explore that. You’ll see that in the film. The Eternals were instructed not to interfere with any human conflict unless Deviants are involved. There’s a reason why that’s the case. And that was the instruction from the prime Celestial Arishem.”

Jack Kirby created the title in 1976. In the comics, the Eternals are a fictional evolutionary offshoot of humanity who possess superpowers and longer lifespans than normal humans. Created by the Celestials over a million years ago, the superpowered beings were the result of genetic experiments that led to the creation of two divergent races: The Eternals and The Deviants.

Often defending Earth from their monstrous counterparts, the Eternals became embroiled in a civil war amongst themselves over whether or not they should conquer the other races. One faction was led by Kronos and the other by his warlike brother named Uranos, with Kronos’ side ultimately winning the conflict while Uranos and his followers were exiled.

Chloé Zhao is directing Eternals from a script written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, and Barry Keoghan as Druig.

Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming Chloé Zhao film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
