Batgirl star Leslie Grace has called her Barbara Gordon a “badass”.
HBO Max is currently developing a solo Batgirl film directed by Bad Boys For Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Written by Christina Hodson, who penned Birds of Prey and The Flash for Warner Bros., has been brought in to script Batgirl as well. Leslie Grace, who most recently appeared in In The Heights, has been cast as the film’s Barbara Gordon.
In a recent chat with Variety, Leslie Grace revealed that she got the role when she was asked to join a last-minute Zoom call for a final casting test. However, she was told to read an e-mail she got before she hopped onto the chat.
I open it and it says, ‘I’m Batgirl’…and my brain broke. It was an incredible moment. When I mean incredible, I mean the textbook definition of, I could not believe it. My brain actually broke when I got the news.”
Leslie Grace then continued by discussing how she immediately dove into the character’s mythology as soon as she got the role.
“That was my first question – what do I read? I’m like, ‘Send me everything I need to learn.’ I just bought every comic and just starting asking so many questions.”
When asked what fans can expect from the HBO Max film, Leslie Grace remained mum, but she did tease that the film will feature lots of fights.
“I will tell you this, Batgirl is a badass. She’s definitely going to be fighting lots of people. She’ll be very hands-on. She’s got a lot to prove.”
While that’s not much to go on, it’s great to see Leslie Grace already so in tune with the character. Rumors have suggested that J. K. Simmons will reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon in the film, making Batgirl one of the most anticipated films coming out of the DC Extended Universe.
In addition to Leslie Grace’s solo film, Savannah Welch is currently playing commissioner Barbara Gordon on HBO Max’s Titans season three. Here is the show’s official synopsis:
“Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find where they belong. In season three, circumstances draw our heroes to Gotham City, where they will reunite with old friends and face new threats.”
Titans stars Brenton Thwaites as Nightwing, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Minka Kelly as Dove, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, Joshua Orpin as Superboy, Curran Walters as Red Hood, Vincent Kartheiser as Jonathan Crane, Savannah Welch as Barbara Gordon, Damaris Lewis as Blackfire, and Iain Glen as Bruce Wayne.
