Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis has addressed the potential for a crossover with Spider-Man.
Perhaps the most bizarre thing to happen with the Spider-Man franchise is just how Sony has handled the titular character and his relationship with Venom. The character made his full appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #299 in 1988 and quickly became one of the character’s most popular antagonists. Since Sony acquired the film rights to Spider-Man the studio tried to get the character on the big screen for years with interesting results.
The first time we saw a live-action version of Venom was in the 2007 film Spider-Man 3. The character’s inclusion was something that director Sam Raimi did not want in the film and was delegated to a third-act antagonist role as a result. Despite earning nearly $900M at the worldwide box office the film was not well received by fans or critics, particularly due to its portrayal of Venom.
For years after, Sony attempted to get some kind of solo Venom film off the ground. In the end, Sony managed to put together the 2018 film Venom starring Tom Hardy. The film was not well received by critics but managed to earn over $800M at the worldwide box office and spawned the upcoming sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Oddly enough, this film had nothing to do with the adjacent Tom Holland Spider-Man films which may remain the case for the time being. Director Andy Serkis, however, seems to think that a crossover is inevitable.
While speaking to IGN, Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis addressed the possibility of Venom meeting up with Spider-Man in live-action once again. The director seemed to think that it was inevitable but felt it should only happen when the time was right:
“Look, that’s the question on everyone’s lips. They want to know if Venom is gonna meet Spider-Man, but personally, it’s never gonna happen. I’m only joking, of course it’s gonna happen…
Look, it depends when you want to get there, and also, what the appetite is. If people want more Venom stories, then, to jump straight to Spider-Man, you could be missing out on so many great supervillain characters in between now and then. So, in a way, by rushing to it, you might be closing the door.”

The evolution story of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass character – Venom! Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is a broken man after he loses everything including his job and fiancée. Just when his life is at its lowest, he becomes host to an alien symbiote which results in extraordinary superpowers – transforming him into Venom. Will these powers be enough for this new lethal protector to defeat great evil forces, especially against the far stronger and more weaponized symbiote rival, Riot?
Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script written by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Ron Cephas Jones, and Woody Harrelson.
