James Gunn Confirms ‘Toxic Avenger’ Easter Egg In ‘The Suicide Squad’

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has confirmed that there is a Toxic Avenger easter egg in the film.

James Gunn’s films notably feature dozens upon dozens of easter eggs, to the point where fans are generally overwhelmed with the abundance of nods and throwbacks. In fact, there’s still one easter egg in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that fans still haven’t uncovered. All eyes are currently on The Suicide Squad, Gunn’s latest superhero ensemble film, which features a colorful cast of diabolical characters. The film is filled to the brim with references to the larger DC mythos but fans have just uncovered an easter egg relating to an Avenger.

During a sequence set in the ghastly Belle Reve prison, a television is seen playing an older television show or movie. A fan took to Twitter to ask James Gunn what was playing on the TV. Gunn replied by revealing that The Toxic Avenger was playing on the screen.

The Toxic Avenger was released in 1984 by Troma Entertainment, a studio that specialized in shlocky, campy, B-movies. The studio’s various projects have clearly influenced James Gunn throughout his career, so it’s no surprise that The Suicide Squad director wanted to pay homage to one of the great horror producers. Interestingly, Marvel Comic would later go on to integrate The Toxic Avenger into their cannon, retroactively making The Toxic Avenger a Marvel film. Talk about a crossover, huh?

Here is the synopsis for The Suicide Squad:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid, and Taika Waititi.

The Suicide Squad is out now in theatres and HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of The Suicide Squad and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
