Black Widow star Olga Kurylenko discussed the future of Taskmaster in the MCU.
In Black Widow, the Marvel Cinematic Universe takes viewers back to the timeline before the events of Avengers: Infinity War in which Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) reunites with her family and goes on her own adventure separate from Earth’s Mightiest Heroes after going on the run after the events of Captain America: Civil War. The film introduces fans to Taskmaster, but in a different form from the comics, with actress Olga Kurylenko playing a female version of the villain, whose identity is Antonia Dreykov.
Taskmaster has the ability to mimic any fighting style she encounters, and as the daughter of Dreykov (Ray Winstone), she clearly harbors much internal pain from his abuse. In regards to the her dynamic with Natasha towards the end of the film, Olga Kurylenko told GamesRadar+ that she suspects that Antonia forgives Natasha:
“I think she does. I think there could be more conversation. I think Antonia would have questions to Natasha, ideally. I think she would love to just speak to – [to] understand, just to put closure. But in that moment when the spell is off, and she just realizes, and Natasha says sorry.
And I think, what’s beautiful and what I like to believe is that it is in the capacity of this girl Antonia to forgive, which means she does have a heart and she is very, extremely sensitive. And she is not what we see her [as], she’s not a cold-blooded killer, which she’s made to be. In reality, she’s a person with a sensitive heart, and who’s suffered and has been abused and has gone through physical and emotional trauma, and has a very complicated relationship with her dad. So I think in that moment she forgives her, but it’s not that simple. If there was a moment, there would be more, I think. It’s not that simple to forgive such a big thing.”
Taskmaster is still alive by the end of the film, leaving the door open for a return in the MCU. When asked about a potential Disney Plus series exploring her origin, Olga Kurylenko expressed interest in returning:
“Mmm let me think about it. No, I’m kidding. Of course I would. [Laughs] Of course.”
If history is any indication, Marvel Studios likes to bring back characters even years after they last appeared. For quite some time, the events of The Incredible Hulk were mostly ignored, partially due to the fact that Mark Ruffalo replaced Edward Norton, but characters such as Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) and the Abomination (Tim Roth) have since returned to the MCU. It would only make sense to see Olga Kurylenko return as Taskmaster at some point.
Here is the synopsis for Black Widow:
In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.
Directed by Cate Shortland from a script written by Eric Pearson based on a story by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson, the Marvel film stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle, Olga Kurylenko, Ray Winstone, Olivier Richters, and Rachel Weisz.
The film is out now in theaters and Disney Plus via Premiere Access. Meanwhile, the first season of Loki is available to stream on Disney Plus.
