‘The Suicide Squad’: James Gunn Shares A Behind The Scenes Look At Polka-Dot Man Make-Up

James Gunn has shared a behind-the-scenes look of David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man and the impressive make-up used in The Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad had no shortage of memorable characters but one of the most surprising was David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man. A victim of his mother’s experimentation, Polka-Dot Man was infected with an interdimensional illness that forced him to expel energy out of his body that happens to expel in the shape of colorful polka-dots. While this initially seems like a joke, the character proves to be more powerful than anyone in The Suicide Squad initially gives him credit for.

One of the most notable scenes to feature the character was one of his earlier moments. In it, the character has massive lumps on his face that are also glowing, much to the horror of his teammates. He explains his condition later on and assured everyone that it is not contagious. Earlier today, director James Gunn shared a behind-the-scenes look at David Dastmalchian in the effects makeup, showing that this was achieved through practical effects and not CGI while recalling his feelings in the post:

1st test of Legacy’s makeup for extreme polka dot disease. Dave has always loved Chaney, Karloff & the Universal monsters & was overcome with emotion that he was their modern embodiment & began to weep. I thought this was a good time to take photos. #TheSuicideSquad #PolkaDotMan pic.twitter.com/eeFmAs6XVv

Here is the synopsis for The Suicide Squad:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid, and Taika Waititi.

The Suicide Squad is out now in theatres and HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of The Suicide Squad and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
