Harley Quinn’s Big Scene In ‘The Suicide Squad’ Almost Played To Another Song

The big escape scene for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad almost played to a completely different song.

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad has been in theaters and on HBO Max for almost a month and still has fans talking about it. While it hasn’t exactly impressed at the box office the film has been a hit on HBO Max, and several spinoffs are in development. James Gunn himself has remained coy about the film’s relation with the previous installments but at least one key character has remained.

In the film, Margot Robbie reprised her role as Harley Quinn having ended up back in jail for what she described as extreme road rage. In the film, two teams were sent to the island of Corto Maltese with Harley’s team being mostly wiped out, Rick Flagg retreating injured into the jungle, and Quinn being capture by the Maltese government. Eventually, the character breaks out of the prison, gunning down everyone in the building as Louis Prima’s “Just A Gigalo/I Ain’t Got Nobody” plays in the background. But once upon a time, this was not the song James Gunn intended to play in the scene.

Earlier today a fan asked James Gunn if this song was always intended to be played for the scene. The Suicide Squad director revealed that originally he had something else in mind:

I considered Queen’s “Death on Two Legs” but once I thought of “Just a Gigolo” I knew it was the right choice. #TSSWatchParty https://t.co/1doa650SFS

Here is the synopsis for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid, and Taika Waititi.
