‘Eternals’ Producer Says Marvel Film Shares Same ‘DNA’ As ‘Nomadland’

Eternals producer Nate Moore has teased how Nomadland thematically connects with the Marvel film.

Marvel is no stranger to attracting A-list talent, especially Oscar-winners. However, in a strange twist that had great foresight, Marvel managed to nab their first Oscar-winning director before they got the golden statue. The studio tapped Chloe Zhao to direct the sprawling epic Eternals as she was finishing up Nomadland, her third feature film. The Frances McDormand-led film went on to win Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Director for Zhao, making her the first director with a golden statue to helm a Marvel feature.

With the Eternals set to hit cinemas later this year, fans of Nomadland and Marvel hopefuls are excited to see what Chloe Zhao will bring to the table. In a recent chat with Empire, Eternals producer Nate Moore discussed how the Marvel film shares the same DNA as Zhao’s Nomadland, which she penned as well.

“Chloé’s interested in telling stories about outsiders who find themselves adrift in new worlds. Nomadland and Eternals both share that DNA. Nomadland doesn’t have the same bells and whistles as Eternals, but it has the same thematic resonance.

The Marvel producer then went on to discuss how Zhao’s new Hollywood clout is not something the studio is used to dealing with.

“This is definitely a new one for all of us. ‘From the Academy Award-winning director of…’ isn’t a phrase you’re used to hearing before Marvel movies.”

Empire also managed to get their hands on a brand new still of the film.

The still doesn’t reveal any new details though it does show the core Eternals crew (sans Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek) walking through a desert, as Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos leads them, likely to one of their ancient, deeply hidden ships.

Often defending Earth from their monstrous counterparts, the Eternals became embroiled in a civil war amongst themselves over whether or not they should conquer the other races. One faction was led by Kronos and the other by his warlike brother named Uranos, with Kronos’ side ultimately winning the conflict while Uranos and his followers were exiled.

Chloé Zhao is directing Eternals from a script written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, and Barry Keoghan as Druig.

Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
