Lilly Wachowski Reveals Why She Isn’t Working On ‘The Matrix: Resurrections’

The Matrix franchise co-creator Lilly Wachowski has revealed why she isn’t working on the upcoming film, The Matrix: Resurrections.

First officially announced in 2019, The Matrix: Resurrections is a film that has a few missing elements from the original trilogy. Hugo Weaving, who played Agent Smith in the first three films will not be involved in the fourth film, nor will Laurence Fishburne for reasons even he is unaware of. One of the most notable absences is franchise co-creator, Lilly Wachowski.

In the past, Lilly Wachowski has spoken about her experiences in Hollywood and has revealed why she left that aspect of the industry. More recently she was asked at the Television Critics Association why she was not involved in The Matrix: Resurrections and the answer turned out to be rather personal and emotional:

“I needed to, like, reconnect to myself as an artist. And I did that by going back to school and painting and stuff. And I made that decision — I started painting that summer with my mom, and then Lana got the call from Netflix that they wanted to order up another season [of Sense8], and I said, “I can’t do it. I don’t want to do it.” And, you know, my mom and dad died like three years ago, and that was, like, a particularly brutal stretch of time in my life.”

She then went on to directly address why she isn’t involved in the upcoming film:

“I didn’t want to have gone through my transition and gone through this massive upheaval in my life, the sense of loss from my mom and dad, to want to go back to something that I’ve done before and sort of walk over old paths that I had walked in… like I was going to go back and live in these old shoes, in a way, and I didn’t want to do that.”

The Matrix and its two sequels collectively earned $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss portrayed Neo and Trinity, respectively, in all three chapters of the film series, each of which were directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski.

Directed by Lana Wachowski from a script she co-wrote with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchel, the upcoming The Matrix sequel stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Eréndira Ibarra, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra, Andrew Caldwell, and Brian J. Smith.

The Matrix: Resurrections is currently set to hit theaters on December 22, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
