‘Black Canary’ Film With Jurnee Smollett In Development For HBO Max

Warner Bros. and DC are reportedly developing a Black Canary solo film starring Jurnee Smollett and written by Misha Green for HBO Max.

DC is setting up a few projects at HBO Max to help grow the streamer’s exclusives. A Batgirl film is in the works with Bad Boys For Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Leslie Grace is set to star as Barbara Gordon.

Angel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beattle film starring Xolo Maridueña and the Michael B Jordan-produced Static Shock project are also heading straight to HBO Max. According to Cinelinx, Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary is the latest to get a solo film set at HBO Max. Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green will reportedly write the upcoming project.

Jurnee Smollett first appeared as Black Canary in Birds of Prey—here is the DC film’s official synopsis:

“You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.”

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Birds of Prey is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the DC Extended Universe, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more exclusive video content.
