What If…? producer Brad Winderbaum has revealed why Tom Holland isn’t voicing Spider-Man in the animated series.
Marvel’s first animated series What If…? boasts an insanely stacked cast, with most of the cast members from the films reprising their roles for the series. Some of the heavyweights include Sebastian Stan, Chris Hemsworth, Hayley Atwell, Chadwick Boseman, and Natalie Portman. Some notable exceptions include Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland.
Seeing as Robert Downey Jr.’s contract with Marvel has come to a close, it makes sense why he won’t be returning in What If…? Tom Holland on the other hand? Well, he’s set to return as Spider-Man in this winter’s No Way Home. So why isn’t he in What If…? Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum revealed to Collider that Holland didn’t voice Spider-Man in the show because of his contract with Sony.
“You know, I’m not treated to all the ins and outs of the relationship with Sony. But, I think it may have had something to do with it, yeah.”
It’s disappointing that Tom Holland won’t be voicing Spider-Man as his What If…? episode sees him donning Doctor Strange’s levitation cloak and fighting off zombies. It’s unclear what Marvel and Sony’s contract for Spider-Man looks like, but it seems evident that Holland isn’t allowed to lend his voice talents to the character. It’s not an ideal situation but we won’t complain because having Spider-Man in the MCU is a big enough deal as it is.

What If…? features the voices of Josh Brolin, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Chadwick Boseman, Jeffrey Wright, Hayley Atwell, and other major stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
