Dune director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed that he is currently writing the sequel to the film.
The upcoming Dune film is one that Warner Bros seems to have a lot of faith in. The movie will reportedly cost around $165M which does not include marketing costs with an HBO Max prequel series currently in development. Since it was first announced, the film was pushed back multiple times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was involved in a lawsuit over its HBO Max release, but now finally seems to have a hard release date.
For some time it has been known that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune will tell roughly half of the story in Frank Herbert’s original novel. What this exactly means, however, is not entirely clear but cinematographer Greig Fraser has assured everyone that the film will tell a complete story. Now that most of the work on Dune is done, Villeneuve is working on the second film.
While speaking to GamesRadar+, the Dune director confirmed that he was currently writing the second film and how excited the process was making him:
“I’m writing [Part Two] now, and I feel like I’m eight years old again. That’s very uncommon for me. It’s the first time I’ve experienced it where I’m watching one of my movies, and I have a moment of deep gratitude, of deep joy, and I say, ‘Thank you, life, for having allowed me to bring that to the screen.’ [laughs] I don’t know how other people will feel about it. But me? Denis Villeneuve when he was 14 years old? Thank you.”
Here is the synopsis for Dune:
Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.
Denis Villeneuve directed Dune from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and David Dastmalchian.
