‘Stranger Things 4’ Producer Reveals Why The Season Is Taking So Long

Stranger Things 4 producer Shawn Levy has revealed why the season is taking longer than usual to drop on Netflix.

Earlier this month, Netflix debuted the first look at Stranger Things 4. Albeit brief, the teaser did a fantastic job of hyping up fans for the future of the show. While many were hoping for a late 2021 release date, the teaser confirmed that the fourth season of Stranger Things won’t drop until 2022.

Keep in mind that the third season of Stranger Things hit Netflix all the way back in the summer of 2019. It’s an unusually long wait between seasons but it should be worth it according to producer Shawn Levy.

In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter about his recently released film Free Guy, Levy opened up about why the fourth season of Stranger Things is taking so long. While the COVID-19 pandemic did stutter production, isn’t the sole reason why the fourth season is taking so long.

“Thank you for not asking me for a release date because I’ve already been misquoted this week, slightly, on that topic. I’ll just say that we are long-delayed, and the Duffers and I want to share season four with the world as badly as the world wants it. Part of what’s taking time is long before Covid and the pandemic existed, season four was built to be by far the most ambitious, cinematic, sprawling and epic season that we’ve ever done. By not just a little — by a lot. So the complexity of season four, even before we had the obstacles, hurdles and challenges of a pandemic, is taking a lot of time because it is super worth the wait.”

Each season of Stranger Things has upped the ante of each previous one, so it isn’t surprising that season four is the most ambitious yet. Stranger Things 4 is set to juggle tons of storylines, including the return of Hopper, so it’s great that The Duffer Brothers and Shawn Levy aren’t rushing things.

Here is the official synopsis for the third season of Stranger Things:

“It’s 1985 in Hawkins, Indiana, and summer’s heating up. School’s out, there’s a brand new mall in town, and the Hawkins crew are on the cusp of adulthood. Romance blossoms and complicates the group’s dynamic, and they’ll have to figure out how to grow up without growing apart. Meanwhile, danger looms. When the town’s threatened by enemies old and new, Eleven and her friends are reminded that evil never ends; it evolves. Now they’ll have to band together to survive, and remember that friendship is always stronger than fear.”

Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Dacre Montgomery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, and Cara Buono.
