Idris Elba addressed rumors that he’d replace Will Smith as Deadshot in The Suicide Squad.
After James Gunn signed on to write and direct The Suicide Squad, fans were caught by surprise when Will Smith bowed out of reprising his role as Deadshot in the sequel due to scheduling conflicts. Subsequently, Idris Elba was cast in his place, and it was heavily-reported that he would be taking over the Deadshot role from Will Smith.
Thankfully, that wasn’t the case, and Idris Elba instead played a completely different character in Bloodsport. The Suicide Squad, despite featuring some returning cast members including Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis, serves as a standalone sequel to the 2016 film directed by David Ayer. With Idris Elba playing Bloodsport, this keeps the door open for Will Smith to return as Deadshot in the future.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Idris Elba addressed the rumors that he was originally taking over the role of Deadshot from Will Smith in The Suicide Squad:
“Those rumors would be natural because Will said he wasn’t joining the second movie, so it was quite natural for audiences or fans to think that I would be taking over the Deadshot character because the Deadshot character lived in the other movie.But I’m really satisfied that James [Gunn] didn’t want to do that, I didn’t want to do that. Deadshot is a great character and Will slays it, so I was really keen the audience and fans kept that rumor going.”
Hopefully, Will Smith returns to the franchise at some point. Besides, imagine the prospect of his Deadshot alongside Idris Elba’s Bloodsport? That would be something exciting to see whether it’d be in a a follow-up to The Suicide Squad or something else entirely.
