‘The Suicide Squad’: DC Film Opens To $26.5 Million At The US Box Office

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and DC’s The Suicide Squad debuted to $26.5 million at the U.S. Box Office.

The Suicide Squad, a standalone sequel to the 2016 David Ayer DC Extended Universe film premiered simultaneously in U.S. theaters and on HBO Max this weekend. The film has been critically acclaimed, currently standing at an impressive 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from Critics and an 86% approval rating from audiences.

However, despite James Gunn’s film receiving acclaim from critics and audiences alike, the film debuted at $26.5 million from 4,002 theaters in North America, coming in below Warner Bros. Pictures’ expectations. Some cite the surges in the COVID-19 Delta variant as well as the hybrid at-home release on HBO Max for the smaller-than-expected box office numbers. The film still became the record-holder for the biggest opening for an R-Rated film amidst the pandemic.

At this time, the official streaming numbers for The Suicide Squad on HBO Max have yet to be released.

Despite the box office performance of The Suicide Squad, James Gunn is expected to continue working with DC on future projects. For one, the upcoming HBO Max exclusive series Peacemaker starring John Cena reprising his role from the film will premiere on the streamer in January 2022.

Here is the synopsis for The Suicide Squad:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid and Taika Waititi.
