James Gunn teased the fates of some major characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Hot off of the release of his incredible new DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad, James Gunn is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and of course, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The writer/director was reinstated to direct the highly-anticipated sequel following his abrupt firing after controversial tweets resurfaced.
In The Suicide Squad, James Gunn kills off an enormous amount of DC Comics characters in brutal fashion that harkens back to his days at Troma Entertainment. No stranger to killing off major characters in his blockbuster films, James Gunn teased that some major characters of the Guardians of the Galaxy series may not make it out alive in Vol. 3. While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, James Gunn compared the life-or-death stakes on both the Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, and how those stakes may be elevated in Vol. 3:
“There is a much bigger sense of danger for all of our characters in The Suicide Squad because we know all of them could die. Whereas in Guardians, yes, obviously I killed Yondu, I killed the big original Groot, but it isn’t the same thing. We know most of them are going to make it out alive. At least for two movies.”
When asked about what will happen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn remained ominous, teasing that fans will have to “wait and see” to see what happens to the beloved cosmic misfits of the MCU.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023. Here is the synopsis for James Gunn’s newest film, The Suicide Squad:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid and Taika Waititi.
The Suicide Squad is out now in theatres and HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on James Gunn’s newest film and his upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
