‘Aquaman 2’ Producer Says Johnny Depp Fan Protests Didn’t Affect Amber Heard

Aquaman 2 producer Peter Safran says that the pressure of Johnny Depp’s fans to remove Amber Heard as Mera did not affect the film.

The sequel to the smash-hit Aquaman is finally filming in the United Kingdom. One of the most anticipated films in DC’s upcoming slate, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will see Jason Momoa and Amber Heard returning as Arthur and Mera, respectively. Director James Wan, who often shies away from action sequels, will also be returning behind the camera. The road to production appears to be relatively smooth for outsiders, but one constant conversation that dominated the sequel was the return of Amber Heard after the countless protests by Johnny Depp fans.

Without getting too bogged down in the details, Amber Heard and her husband Johnny Depp divorced in 2017 amidst a lengthy legal battle that continued all the way up until 2020. Throughout the court proceedings, fans petitioned and rallied online to get Heard replaced from Aquaman 2. Well, with the film currently in production, and Heard on set in the UK, those petitions and rallies clearly didn’t work. In a chat with Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast, Aquaman 2 producer Peter Safran said that the petitions against Heard weren’t given much thought.

“I don’t think we’re ever going to react to, honestly, pure fan pressure. You gotta do what’s best for the movie. We felt that if it’s James Wan, and Jason Momoa, it should be Amber Heard. That’s really what it was.”

“One is not unaware of what is going on in the Twitter-verse, but that doesn’t mean you have to react to it or take it as gospel or accede to their wishes. You have to do what’s right for the film, and that’s really where we landed on it.”
