If you were to ask me what trainers everyone needs to own, I’d say a really great pair of white trainers. For context, I’ve spent a long time loving sneakers. From the Adidas Gazelles that I got aged 9 to the collection I’ve amassed 17 years later, you could say I’m a big fan. What I’m trying to say is I don’t suddenly love sneakers because they’re ‘in’. Trainers have, of course, become quite the status symbol in the fashion world. Starting with Phoebe Philo’s love of Adidas Stan Smiths to sell-out chunky sneakers by the likes of Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton, we’re now at the point where wearing trainers is as common as wearing heels. And there are no trainers more versatile than the white trainer.
But, I hear you ask, there are so many, which ones are right for me? This is true and why it can be such a tricky category to navigate. It seems like every season there are more white sneakers to choose from—whether it’s a cool new brand everyone is excited about or another fashion house has released its version of the classic white sneaker. Most recently, French brand Vejas have become ubiquitous amongst Instagram stars and A-listers. But let’s not forget how popular New Balance have become recently. Not to mention Converse’s high-tops continue to prove its fashion longevity, as they’re spotted on street stylers every fashion week.
To help you know which pair of white trainers you’d love, I’ve broken it down into the following sections: classics, vintage styles, chunky, the new brands on the block and the cool designer versions. Keep scrolling for more.
Style Notes: These are the sneakers that are completely unassuming. Unless you’re a trainer-spotting pro, you’ll have to get up close to know which brand you’re wearing. But that’s the whole point: these are trainers that will blend in with everything you own and still look super chic.
Style Notes: Various trainer brands re-issue old versions of their sneakers and have seen great successes as a result. Nike Cortez and New Balance’s vintage-style versions are two of my personal favourites.
Style Notes: Chunky sneakers continue to be popular among the fashion crowd. While Louis Vuitton’s Archlight aren’t quite to everyone’s taste, there are also the classic Nike Dunks or Alexander McQueen trainers to consider.
Style Notes: There are always new trainer brands cropping up right now. Good News is a London-based sustainable brand that does some great options but Instagram is going nuts from Axel Arigato’s sneakers right now.
Style Notes: Plenty of designers have now got in on the act when it comes to creating their own versions of trainers. While it might be surprising for some brands to delve into the world of athleisure, there have been some wonderful results. Whether you’re into Bottega Veneta’s chunky versions (as seen on the Olsens) or Loewe’s cool runners, there are plenty of designer pieces you might want to consider.
