‘Black Widow’ Opens With $215 Million Globally Thanks To Theaters & Disney Plus

Disney has officially revealed that Marvel Studios’ Black Widow opened to unprecedented numbers in theaters and on Disney Plus.

Black Widow officially hit theaters and Disney Plus through Premier Access this weekend. Not only did the Scarlett Johansson-led film easily take the Box Office crown in its opening weekend, but Disney has officially announced the revenue the film received through Disney Plus Premier Access. The film earned $80 million at the domestic box office, $78 million at the international box office and $60 million through Disney Plus Premier Access.

This is the first time the studio has ever revealed such numbers since Premier Access was introduced for Mulan, and was subsequently used for Raya and the Last Dragon, Cruella, Black Widow and the upcoming Jungle Cruise. Kareem Daniel, Chairman of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution released the following statement in response to the film’s financial performance both on the big screen and on Disney Plus:

“Once again, Marvel has delivered an exceptional film to the delight of fans worldwide with Black Widow achieving numerous milestones in the current marketplace. Black Widow’s strong performance this weekend affirms our flexible distribution strategy of making franchise films available in theaters for a true cinematic experience and, as COVID concerns continue globally, providing choice to consumers who prefer to watch at home on Disney+.”

Disney Studios Content Chairman Alan Bergman released the following statement as well:

“It’s incredible to see audiences enjoying Black Widow after two years without a new Marvel Studios film, and this spectacular opening weekend shows just how eager fans have been to see this beloved Avenger in her own story. There’s no question it’s been worth the wait – Cate Shortland, Scarlett Johansson, and the Marvel Studios team have delivered an exceptional film that continues a legacy of creative excellence as the Marvel Cinematic Universe expands and enters a new era.”

Black Widow is officially the biggest domestic opening since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hit theaters on December 20, 2019. The film is also the first to surpass $100 million in domestic consumer spending on its opening weekend since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Black Widow is now playing in theaters and available to stream on Disney Plus through Premiere Access.
