Man of Steel and The Suicide Squad producer Charles Roven thinks that multiple Superman projects can exist at the same time.
Since the critical and financial failure of Justice League back in 2017, the state of the DC Extended Universe has been a mess. Many projects have been delayed, reworked, or flat-out canceled with several actors leaving the franchise altogether. One of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind is what will happen to Henry Cavill’s version of Superman.
Since the release of Justice League, Henry Cavill has yet to appear as Superman with even talks of a cameo for Shazam! falling apart. Since then, Warner Bros. and DC have come just short of confirming the actor’s departure from the role with The Suicide Squad director James Gunn being unsure which version of Superman Bloodsport shot before the events of the film. The company has seemingly hopped around the issue by developing other versions of the character as well as adding other Kryptonians to the DC Extended Universe. A new Superman project is in development with J.J. Abrams and a version of Supergirl is set to appear in Ezra Miller’s upcoming film, The Flash. Regardless of what happens to Henry Cavill’s version of the character, producer Charles Roven seems to think that all of these Superman projects can co-exist.
Charles Roven has been a producer on a number of DC adaptations since Batman Begins back in 2005. He was also a producer on the 2013 film, Man of Steel and was involved in the casting of star Henry Cavill. While discussing the DC Universe as a whole with Comicbook.com, the producer talked about the multiple Batman characters, Superman, and how they could all exist at the same time but also stated he was only attached to Superman projects that spun off from Man of Steel:
“If they’re going to go along with a filmmaker’s vision, you have to allow for multiple visions. You can’t have it any other way. Not everybody’s going to think alike. And so I think if somebody brought them a cohesive vision, it’s my understanding, and I could be wrong because I haven’t read the script or whatever, but even in The Flash thing that supposedly has multiple Batman’s, it does have somewhat of a cohesive vision to the universe that’s been created since Ezra [Miller] has been playing The Flash. And so, they’re not saying, ‘Never,’ to anything and I like that. It’s got to work. You know what I’m saying? It’s got to work. You’ve got to be able to actually say, ‘Here’s what I’m really going to deliver and then it’s got to work.’
Quite frankly, the comic books that this is all based on, the canon that this is all based on has never done [said, ‘Never’]. They’ve been able to do amazing off-shoots and listen, look at what Geoff Johns has done by helping create the New 52, when the canon was getting a little stale. And look what… He did it again when he created all the different Lanterns, not just a Green Lantern. I mean, why shouldn’t you be able to do that in the film medium, in the motion picture medium?
I’m only attached to anything that’s spun off of Man of Steel. So once Henry Cavill is no longer a part of Superman, then I’m not attached to Superman. Right now, I think right now I’m attached to Justice League. I’m attached to Wonder Woman and I’m attached to The Suicide Squad.”
