‘The Suicide Squad’: Margot Robbie Teases A Changed Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie has teased a changed Harley Quinn for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

Harley Quinn has gone through a considerable amount of changes since her live-action debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad. The David Ayer-directed film spent a considerable amount of discussing Quinn’s adherence to the Joker, pointing out how increasingly toxic and one-way the relationship really was. This core theme extended into Birds of Prey, where the Margot Robbie character explored her independence after she broke up with the Joker. Throughout the 2020 film, Quinn doubted herself, debating if she could succeed without Joker by her side.

In a recent interview with the Toronto Sun, Margot Robbie discussed how The Suicide Squad expands on Harley Quinn’s emotional growth despite not necessarily relating to Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey.

“I think in the first Suicide Squad film she had a certain confidence and cockiness, knowing that she had the protection of the Joker. She was like, ‘I’ll go on this mission, and he’ll get me out of here in a second.’ That was kind of her prerogative on that film. Then in Birds of Prey it was, ‘Oh s—, it’s a scary, cold world. Maybe I can’t do it.’”

“In this film, time has passed, it doesn’t directly link to either of those films, but it’s not something that Harley is wrestling with anymore. She’s not waiting for Mr. J to show up and she’s not wondering if she can do it on her own. She knows.”

You can check out the synopsis for Margot Robbie’s The Suicide Squad below:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.
