‘Guardians of the Galaxy’: Djimon Hounsou Wasn’t Big Enough To Play Drax

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has revealed that Djimon Hounsou wasn’t big enough to play Drax.

Djimon Hounsou appeared as Korath in Guardians of the Galaxy and later in Captain Marvel but it turns out that the star originally auditioned as Drax for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The role of Drax eventually went to Dave Bautista, not necessarily because the wrestler was the better actor, but rather because he was just bigger. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to Twitter to take about the issues caused in the casting process when actors lie about their height.

In the thread, James Gunn revealed that Djimon Hounsou wasn’t able to snag the role of Drax because he wasn’t big enough. Hounsou, who Gunn described as well over 6 feet, wasn’t big enough for the role when placed alongside Star-Lord star Chris Pratt or Ronan actor Lee Pace. Hounsou stands at 6 ft 1 while eventual Drax actor Dave Bautista stands tall at 6 ft 6, towering over Pratt and Hounsou.

I remember going out to eat to dinner for the first time with @djimonhounsou, @prattprattpratt & @DaveBautista. Djimon is a big guy, well over 6 feet & incredibly fit, & as he sat in his car he saw these two giants hulking out of the house, like a couple of kaijus stalking us.

Earlier Djimon had auditioned for Drax & I told him he wasn’t big enough. He turned to me and told me he had thought I was lying. “Nope,” I said. Next day @leepace showed up on set, who is 6’5″. I do not purposely hire behemoths, it just works out that way.
