The first look at Halle Bailey as Ariel on the Italian set of The Little Mermaid has been revealed through set photos.

Filming has resumed for Disney’s latest live-action remake on the scenic island of Sardinia, Italy. The Little Mermaid is expected to film on the beautiful island for about three months before wrapping up. Set to star Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle fame as Ariel, the live-action reimagining is directed by musical superstar and Disney regular Rob Marshall. The cast is also filled with heavyweights like Javier Bardem as Ariel’s father, Mellisa McCarthy as the villainous Ursula and David Deegs as the voice of the crab Sebastian.

The Daily Mail managed to get their hands on a handful of photos from The Little Mermaid, which give us a great first look at Halle Bailey as Ariel. Halle Bailey is seen sporting a modern-day diving suit on the beach alongside her love interest Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King. Eric is also rocking modern beach attire as well, seemingly confirming that the film is set in the present day.

Disney’s original The Little Mermaid centered on princess Ariel, who longed to explore the world beyond the sea. After saving Prince Eric from drowning, Ariel turns to the sea witch Ursula and trades in her voice in order to become a human for the chance to meet the man she rescued.

Directed by Rob Marshall from a script written by David Magee, Disney’s The Little Mermaid stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as the villainous sea witch Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian the Crab. Academy Award winner Javier Bardem was last reported to be eyed for the role of King Triton.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken will write new songs for the remake to be included alongside the classic tunes the latter penned for the animated version of The Little Mermaid. In addition to his duties as a songwriter, Lin-Manuel Miranda will serve as an executive producer alongside Rob Marshall, Marc Platt, and John DeLuca.
