Justice League VFX supervisor Bryan Hirota opened up about how the evolution of technology helped the Aquaman underwater sequences look better.
Visual effects technology evolves every year, and when it comes to big-budget superhero movies, the VFX teams behind them are the ones making the adventure look as realistic as possible. However, certain heroes come with their own unique challenges. In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the film’s crew had to make Jason Momoa‘s Aquaman look convincing underwater, and the VFX supervisor on the film recently opened up to Heroic Hollywood about the process.
Recently, Bryan Hirota spoke to us about how the effects used in the underwater Aquaman scenes had evolved from the footage used in the theatrical cut. Hirota also revealed that sometimes it made sense to discard some moments from Justice League because of how technology has advanced in the last few years. Take a look a below.
“Our hair solvers and cloth solvers are better now than they were years ago. If there was a shot that required us to go back in and deal with… if we didn’t have good caches for like beard and hair simulations, we would just evaluate if it was worth the effort to promote the work to our new workflow or try to ram it through the old one. Obviously, technology has advanced quite a bit for anything that we would do new if it made sense to discard what we had had from the old stuff. The Aquaman underwater stuff that we did was an evolution of the stuff that we’d done on the original theatrical. Now years later, the approaches and techniques have evolved, and continue to evolve.”
