The Affordable Accessory That Will Make Any Outfit Look 10x Chicer

Sometimes it’s the small things that can make an outfit sing, be it a fabric trim, intricate collar or unusual graphic heel. Neckerchiefs are one such accessory that fall into the ‘less is more’ category, and I have long been a fan on their archival appeal: From the Wild West undertones of a red paisley print to the rock n’ roll flair of a knotted skinny scarf.

While they can feel a little kitsch in certain contexts, I have enjoyed seeing how fellow fashion-lovers have used theirs to add interest to minimalist outfits. Case in point, the above Linda Tol look is deceptively simple, with its slouchy black knit, tailored trousers and striped scarf, but the overall effect is undeniably chic. New scarf brand, Lesscarf, which was launched in 2018, is a great example of the growing appetite for this throwback accessory, and I have fallen head-over-heel for their graphic, Scandi-inspired prints and colourways.  There are plenty of styles to be found on the upper end of the market, but this is also a trend that can be bought on a budget, whether it’s a vintage style from Rokit or one of Arket’s expensive-looking geometric iterations. Scroll down to see how fashion girls are wearing theirs and shop my edit.

A white scarf brings this muted denim-and-trench look to life.

I’ve long relished the elevating powers of the neckerchief, and this is throwback shot from fashion week 2018 where I used a red paisley print scarf to add interest to a minimalist white jumpsuit.

For a more statement style, make like this show-goer and add a mint green scarf to a springy floral coat.

Can’t get enough of the pop of red in this Scandi girl get-up.

Brittany Bathgate is a big fan of the scarf. She uses hers to add interest to her minimalist outfits.
