Most fans might be familiar with Robert Downey Jr.’s troublesome past pre-Iron Man, but the star explained in a new interview that his past experiences helped him relate to Tony Stark; “a guy who really needed to really be handed a dose of ouch” – as he puts it. The star returned to Hollywood with a slew of projects like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Zodiac, and finally Charlie Bartlett before his popularity reached new heights with his role in Marvel Studios’ Iron Man.

During an appearance on A Late Show with Stephen Colbert Super Bowl Special, Robert Downey Jr. reflected on his time working with Marvel Studios, explaining that “The greatest joy was being able to experience it by playing it.” He also pointed out that the MCU arrived at the perfect time since it caught a whole generation at a time where they could rise and grow with these characters over the course of a decade.
