Where The Suicide Squad falls within the DC Extended Universe has been open to debate since the film brings back several characters from the 2016 film but has a new director at the helm with James Gunn. One of the characters from David Ayer’s film that will make a return is Rick Flagg, portrayed once again by Joel Kinnaman.

In The Suicide Squad behind-the-scenes footage that debuted at DC FanDome, we caught a glimpse at Joel Kinnaman’s new look as Rick Flagg. Kinnaman recently spoke about what to call James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and here’s what he had to say:

“With James Gunn, it’s a whole new universe. It’s a completely different thing. We kinda all just started with a blank slate… It doesn’t feel like we’re doing a sequel in any way. It’s a strange kinda middle ground of a reboot. Something in between there.”

Do you think The Suicide Squad will be a sequel or a reboot? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below!

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto as The Joker. However, James Gunn is expected to deliver on a fresh take on the team in his upcoming movie.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.

The Suicide Squad is currently scheduled to hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news regarding James Gunn’s upcoming DC and Marvel films, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
