After Pedro Pascal recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about how Nicolas Cage inspired his villainous performance as Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984, the actor has since clarified what he meant with the comparison. The sequel arrives on HBO Max later this month in a bold move from Warner Bros. and the decision has also been met with criticism from directors like Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve.

But when speaking to Uproxx about his Wonder Woman 1984 performance, Pedro Pascal explained that Nicolas Cage was a “point of reference” as a way of rooting himself in the character for a specific scene opposite Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. He also pointed out that in the original conversation he was trying to convey how much Cage had been an influence on his acting in general. Take a look below.

“Yeah, I don’t relate any of the hamming it up to Nicolas Cage. I at one point in the conversation I was talking about what an incredible influence he was on me as an actor, which is true. And, now, so much so that I would use him as a sort of point of reference to anchor myself, to achieve something in a scene specifically with Wonder Woman, And maybe about a half-hour later in that conversation, I was self-deprecating and accusing myself of ‘shmacting’ and hamming it up, and the two do not go together”
