Lord of the Rings Amazon coronavirusA whole collection of actors have joined the cast of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series that will seemingly take place before the iconic trilogy.

After it was revealed back in July that Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series would be allowed to resume production in New Zealand following the pandemic shutdown, 20 new cast members have been added to the fantasy series. The show will reportedly take place in the second age of Middle-Earth, but before the main trilogy of stories following Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee. Joining stars like Robert Aramayo and Morfydd Clark are Cynthia Adai-Robinson (Power), Benjamin Walker (Heart of the Sea) and Westworld‘s Peter Mullan.

The details surrounding the story and the characters involved are being kept tightly under wraps, but it’ll be interesting to see which famous races from Middle-Earth are involved thanks to such a huge cast. It’s not clear if any of the cast from the original trilogy will return, but Hugo Weaving recently explained why he won’t reprise his role as Elrond. Also coming aboard Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings show are Sir Lenny Henry, Maxim Baldry, Kip Chapman, Ian Blackburn, Trystan Gravelle, Anthony Crum, Maxine Cunliffe, Thusitha Jayasundra, Simon Merrells, Fabian McCallum, Geoff Morrell, Peter Tait, Lloyd Owen, Augustus Prew, Sara Zwangobani, Alex Tarrant and Leon Wadham. Showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay also released a statement explaining how excited they are to help bring the fantasy world to life with the talented cast of actors from around the world.

“The world that J.R.R. Tolkien created is epic, diverse, and filled with heart. These extraordinarily talented performers, hailing from across the globe, represent the culmination of a multi-year search to find brilliant and unique artists to bring that world to life anew. The international cast of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series is more than just an ensemble. It is a family. We are thrilled to welcome each of them to Middle-earth.”
