The attorneys general for 33 states and the District of Columbia have attained a $113 million settlement with Apple over allegations the iPhone manufacturer throttled operation in a number of generations of the unit to hide a design flaw in the batterylife.

The states alleged that Apple throttled functionality in aging iPhones without telling users it had been doing this or why. This concealment violated states’ consumer protection legislation, that the attorneys general contended.

“Apple withheld information for their batteries which slowed down iPhone operation, while passing off as a upgrade,” California Attorney General Xavier Becerra stated when declaring the payoff. “Now’s settlement guarantees customers are going to have access to this information that they should produce a well-informed decision when buying and using Apple products”
